Mega events are events that are larger than your average event, mega events are the events that are scene on a world wide bases, a definition from Shanghai manual (2010), “A mega-event is large scale, internationally sponsored, public entrepreneurship activity engaging a long-term multi-sector organization within the host city and nation with the double goal of supporting overall local and regional development and advancing universal values and principles to meet global challenges.”, with another definition from Bladen (2012), “the term 'mega-event' refers to those events that take place for a global media audience and/or that have significant, long-term impacts on the economies and societies”, this being said events that have large audiences with social impacts as well as economic impacts are scene as mega-events.
The difference between a large event and mega events is that one Is scene on a world wide scale that has impacts that last in local, regional, national and global areas. Some of the mega-events that are well know would be the Olympic games, FIFA world cup and political summits, what makes these events mega-events? They all grab the attention of a world wide audience as well as bringing people together in a social way to create social impacts and also having economic impacts on the economy as well as they local communities. This also leads into events such as Glastonbury and Notting hill carnival, these are known as large/Hallmark events which also is scene a global media audience but only on a regional social economic impact which is the main difference between mega-events and large/hallmark events.
Many people believe that mega-events are important to the events industry because they bring the world together through and enjoyable and memorable event, that not only brings social impacts to the world but also bring economic impacts to the economy such as more revenue for the country that the event is held in. Another important factor of mega-events is that each event is held in a different country which again brings people together as well as getting each team member for the games, tournaments or a group of people from different countries to compete in the Olympics and FIFA or to discuss the important facts and issues of their own country, these types of events are known as global events.
Some of the limitations to mega events are that they are not on a annually bases they are every four years which then means that it is hard to maintain the social economic impacts that are achieved during the event.
